One of the Largest Independent Antivirus Testing Organizations, AV-Test, Certifies PC Matic 3.0

PC Matic Earns Second Consecutive AV-Test Certification

PC Matic first tested with AV-Test in the fall of 2017, and earned its first AV-Test certification at that time.  In January and February of 2018, AV-Test conducted another round of testing in their Home Windows test category.  The testing resulted in AV-Test awarding PC Matic 3.0 with another AV-Test Certification after achieving high marks across their protection and performance testing.

PC Matic‘s Super Shield was able to block 100% of the real-world ransomware/zero-day threats used in the test set, further demonstrating that taking an approach that centers around prevention instead of remediation continues to show its importance. Ransomware infections not only require a ransom paid to recovery encrypted files, but recovery efforts and time lost for the business often cost far more.

In addition, PC Matic out scored other tested security solutions in performance measures.  According to the industry averages, PC Matic was over two-times more efficient than alternative programs.  Due to this level of efficiency, PC Matic had a lower impact on the computer’s speed during daily usage.

In the usability category AV-Test penalized our score for returning a small number of false positives. The false positive test used by AV-Test is extremely robust, with over 1.5 million known good samples. After being tested against those samples, our highest number blocked was 41. This comes down to .004% false positive rate or 99.996% good file accuracy. The number of false positives our users see in the real world is often even lower and further shows that our patent pending globally automated whitelist is a truly innovative approach.

Advertising Methods of America’s Antivirus – PC Matic

PC Matic – A Direct Response Advertiser

Lately, we have been receiving a significant amount of feedback regarding ad placements, specifically when they air.  This feedback has included praise for what shows we air on, to indifference, to threats of boycotts.  We wanted to address these concerns immediately, however, there are a few things people need to know.

First, we are not what is called a general advertiser.  General advertisers utilize an ad agency.  The ad agencies are able to request when their client’s ads air, or don’t air.

Unlike a general advertiser, PC Matic is a direct response advertiser.  What this means is, we place orders containing rates for the air time that is remaining after the general advertisers have chosen their ad spots.  Therefore, we are not guaranteed any air time at all.  We simply receive whatever ad spots are available and within our order.  Also, for some of the TV providers, specifically Dish Network and DirectTV, we place orders based on what is called a “news cluster”.  The news cluster contains a predefined list of news networks such as Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, etc.  When an ad spot clears for the cluster, we air at the same time on all of the networks within the cluster.  For example, an ad that is on at 9:20 p.m. EST on Fox News, will also be on at 9:20 p.m. EST on CNN and MSNBC.

We understand the concerns expressed regarding our ads airing during certain programming.  However, it is important our customers understand, our ad placements are out of our control.  We do not have an ad agency to decide when our ads air, nor do we purchase ad space based on programming.

For readers who encourage us to obtain an ad agency to gain control over when our ads will air, PC Pitstop CEO and founder, Rob Cheng, explains his decision not to hire an ad agency here.

We hope our supporters understand our advertising methods a bit better.  If anyone has questions, feel free to drop a comment below.

AV-Test Breaks Down PC Matic Performance, Protection, and Usability

PC Matic has been testing with AV-Test since the fall of 2017, with test scores progressively increasing.  In August, AV-Test conducted another round of testing, leaving PC Matic with its best protection scores yet.

PC Matic‘s Super Shield was able to block 100% of the real-world threats including zero-day attacks and intrusive web and email threats.  In addition, PC Matic blocked 99.99% of prevalent malware found in the previous four weeks of testing.  In past testing, we recognized there were some kinks that needed to be worked out.  Our development team worked diligently to resolve these issues, resulting in amazing testing scores.

Although protection scores increased, there were issues with the performance and usability of PC Matic.  Our development team is investigating the performance issues AV-Test ran into and working as quickly and efficiently as possible to resolve the flaws for our customers.  We project in the very near future, our customers will be incredibly pleased with the newly enhanced version of PC Matic 3.0.

In the usability category, AV-Test penalized PC Matic for returning a small number of false positives. The false positive test used by AV-Test is extremely robust, with over 1.3 million known good samples. After being tested against those samples in July and August, the total false positives reported were 36. This comes down to .0026% false positive rate or 99.9974% good file accuracy. The number of false positives our users see in the real world is often even lower and further shows that our patent pending globally automated whitelist is a truly innovative approach.

PC Matic Awarded Best IT Anti-Malware Solution by American Security Today

PC Pitstop, the makers of PC Matic were awarded the Gold ASTORS Award for the Best IT Anti-Malware Solution by American Security Today earlier this week, in New York City.

American Security Today’s 2018 ASTORS Homeland Awards Presentation Luncheon at ISC East was an overwhelming success.  The ceremony brought business and government professionals from across North America and the Middle East.  In attendance were representatives from the Department of Homeland Security, Department of Justice, state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as leaders in private security.

During the luncheon celebrating this year’s winners, co-founder, and publisher for American Security Today, Michael Madson stated,

“As the nation continues to respond to escalating threats from home and abroad, the innovative solutions being implemented to meet those threats, has led to tremendous growth in the fields of Homeland Security and Public Safety.”

“Today, the United States is increasingly focusing on protecting IT/cyber security networks, and government and security professionals are calling on innovative companies like those honored with 2018 ‘ASTORS’ Awards, to help them do so.”

To see a list of all of the 2018 ASTORS award winners, click here.

Regarding the award recognition, PC Pitstop founder and CEO, Rob Cheng stated,

“We are honored to be recognized as a leading anti-malware solution for the second consecutive year by American Security Today.  This award represents two things.  First, our dedication to malware prevention, and how that will never waiver.  Second, our continuous growth to actively thwart not only today’s cyber threats, but the attack vectors criminals are using as well.”

PC Matic’s security solution is focused on malware prevention and detection, with the use of application whitelist technology.  In addition to their automated whitelist, PC Matic has added malicious script blocking to thwart fileless malware attacks.  They have also determined RDP attacks have grown substantially year over year.  Therefore, they developed an added layer of security to mitigate the risk of RDP ports being exploited as an attack vector.

38 Days of Giving Back has Begun with The Paper Angels Campaign

100% of Revenues Going to Project Meet Me Halfway

Have you heard of Giving Tuesday?  It’s the Tuesday after Cyber Monday, which is meant to focus on giving back to organizations or your community.  The idea is pretty wonderful, considering the days leading up to it are full of buying the latest gadgets for friends, family, or yourself.

But what if there was 38 straight days of giving back?  One of our valued partners, Burcheyes, is doing just that.  From Black Friday to New Year’s Eve, every single cent of their new business revenue is being donated to charity.  This means no more commissions for their C-level management, or anyone else for that matter.

Burcheyes CEO and founder of The Giving Business, Jason Burch states,

“We are donating 100% of new business revenue through the end of the year to Project Meet Me Halfway.  This is not a percentage of our profits, this is 100% revenue.  No cap. Everything. Every single dollar we receive will go to charity.”

Click here to help support his great cause.

Pretty amazing right?  So, here’s what you can do.  Say you’re buying a new PC for Christmas and you don’t want to run a foriegn-made antivirus on it.  You can sign up for PC Matic’s lifetime license for $150, and 100% of Burcheyes’ revenue will go to Project Meet Me Halfway, to help foster children who age out of the system and face homelessness.    Then, when Burcheyes receives their PC Matic commission check, they’ll donate it all in David Austin’s name.  We cannot imagine a better way to honor him.

If you share this with your friends and 10,000 people buy PC Matic from our link that will raise more than $1 million for children who age out of foster care. I know they’d appreciate it and I would too,” said Jason.  “Invest in these kids.”

PC Matic Makes Major Enhancements During Q3

$

Throughout the third quarter, our development team made some significant enhancements to PC Matic.

PC Matic Revamps Android Product and Enhances SuperShield

These new developments include a revamp to our Android product.  The backend of the PC Matic Android application has been completely rebuilt from the ground up with our newest release. We’re so excited about our new application for Android devices that takes a whitelist based approach to security just like PC Matic for Windows! We really believe this change in security will provide unprecedented security for Android devices in an era of growing mobile attacks. In addition to the change to whitelist focused protection, we’ve also made adjustments to improve stability and scanning times. Stay tuned for more improvements to the Android app in the near future!

We’ve also improved SuperShield’s malware quarantine ability. When known bad applications attempt to run on your computer they will be blocked from running as usual, but will now immediately be put into quarantine and removed from your device. This change will drastically decrease the amount of time it takes for bad applications to be quarantined and cleaned up.

PC Matic Pro Improves User Interface and Protection Capabilities

Now let’s go into the changes that will impact our business users.  PC Matic Pro has implemented a Blocked Status Info tab within the user portal.  This new tab provides a central hub of blocked applications across your environment with an easy path to locally whitelist or blacklist an item without having to drill into the individual machines page. We have also tied in several research tools including links to Virus Total, Meta Defender, and our own Cuckoo Analysis Sandbox results for you to view. The PC Matic Research team’s analysis is also provided within the report. We think this new central location for locally whitelisting will save you time managing your devices!

Additionally, our team has replaced the BITE (Business IT Evaluation report) and Maintenance Stats reports with a new Reporting tab. It includes detailed information from the Security Stats Report along with performance information formerly in the BITE report that can all be looked at with a glance or drilled into by machine.

Lastly, PC Matic Pro introduced the ability to disable RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) from the Endpoint Vulnerabilities tab located in the management console.  This feature provides insight into, and action over, any machines with RDP enabled and any machines with User Options for Super Shield available. Both vulnerabilities can be disabled right from the report.

Now Offering Additional Training Resources for VARs and MSPs

Now, don’t think we forgot about enhancing the user experience for our VARs and MSPs.  In Q3, we’ve added: “On Demand Sales Training Sessions”. We’re always working on expanding the resources available to our partners to learn more about our products. Recently we introduced an on-demand training session with a quiz to test your PC Matic knowledge! Check them out below.

AV-Test Breaks Down PC Matic’s Performance, Protection, and Usability

PC Matic Earns AV-Test Certification

PC Matic has been testing with AV-Test since the fall of 2017, with test scores progressively increasing.  In September and October, AV-Test conducted another round of testing, leaving PC Matic with its best protection and performance scores yet.

**The scores discussed below are an average of PC Matic’s scores for both September and October testing.

Protection

PC Matic‘s Super Shield was able to block 99.7% of the real-world threats including zero-day attacks and intrusive web and email threats.  In addition, PC Matic blocked 100% of prevalent malware found in the previous four weeks of testing.  Overall, we are pleased with these results but will continue to improve our product, striving for 100% detection in both testing categories.

Performance

AV-Test conducts several performance measures to determine how each tested security solution impacts the functionality and efficiency of the PC.  PC Matic came in first place, with the least impact on the endpoint, in a majority of these test.  After averaging each solutions scores in the performance tests, PC Matic was the clear leader in the performance category.

Usability

The usability tests within the AV-Test certification process is entirely based on false warnings, notifications, or classifications — also known as false positives.  Since PC Matic uses a whitelist as its primary method of malware detection, there will always be false positives.  Fortunately, we are able to minimize the number of these, decreasing the negative impact on user experience.

The false positive test used by this testing agency is extremely robust, with over 1.3 million known good samples. After being tested against those samples in September and October, the total false positives reported were 46. This comes down to .0034% false positive rate or 99.9966% good file accuracy. The number of false positives our users see in the real world is often even lower and further shows that our patent pending globally automated whitelist is a truly innovative approach.

If you’d like to check out the test results for yourself, head on over to AV-Test.

Scammers Portraying Security Companies Offer Major Refunds

$
0
0

An Old Scam Gains More Traction…

Almost a year ago, we broke news on a scam hackers were running offering refunds for companies that were “going out of business”.  In reality, none of these companies were really shutting down.  Instead, hackers were using this as an excuse to gain the personal banking information of victims, so they could “process” the refund.

To this day, one of the major businesses hackers claim to represent is “antivirus providers”.  Hackers know, with the increased dependency on technology, most people have a computer or mobile device that should have antivirus protection on it.  Scammers are exploiting this, by calling unexpected victims claiming to be from their “antivirus company”, which they claim is going out of business.  Their comments will remain vague, careful not to disclose a company name.  Instead, they wait for the victim to respond with something like “Oh, PC Matic?”.  And just like that, they have the information they need.  Often times, the victim doesn’t think twice that they’ve given the hackers the information they needed to appear to be legitimately from their security solution.

This is exactly what happened to a 67-year-old Arkansas resident.  After providing her banking information for the refund, the scammer called back saying the wrong amount was transferred, and she would need to transfer back thousands of dollars.  It was then, she realized it was a scam.  She immediately hung up and froze her bank accounts.

Don’t be a Victim

First, it is important to know, companies are not going to call every customer offering a refund if they go out of business.  Instead, they would likely do a major press release and/or send out a letter or email confirming the company’s doors are closing.  Taking the time to notify each customer by phone is not realistic.  If you receive a call like this, you’re encouraged to tell them you know it’s a scam.  They will likely hang up, and not call again.

Also, do your due diligence and share this information with your friends and family.  The more people know the less likely they are to fall victim.

Stay safe out there!

AV-Test Confirms, PC Matic Out Performs Other AV Solutions

Out Performing Industry Standards

PC Matic‘s SuperShield outperformed industry standards, blocking 100% of the real-world threats including zero-day attacks and intrusive web and email threats, in the latest round of testing by independent third-party testing authority, AV-Test.  In addition, PC Matic blocked 100% of prevalent malware found in the previous four weeks of testing.

Compared to the previous testing scores, not only did protection scores increase but so did the performance.   PC Matic earned the top score for performance, and as you can see by the chart below, outperforms every other security solution tested.

Combined, not only does PC Matic provide advanced protection, but also has the least amount of impact on endpoint performance.  A win-win.

Usability and False Positives

In the usability category, AV-Test penalized PC Matic for returning a small number of false positives. The false positive test used by AV-Test is extremely robust, with over 1.5 million known good samples. After being tested against those samples in November and December, the total false positives reported were 40. This comes down to .0027% false positive rate or 99.9973% good file accuracy. The number of false positives our users see in the real world is often even lower and further shows that our patent pending globally automated whitelist is a truly innovative approach.

To check out the test results, head over to AV-Test.

Deep Roots in the Culture and Success of Gateway, Inc.

Taking Pride in Our Roots to Gateway, Inc.

PC Pitstop, the maker of PC Matic, PC Matic Pro and PC Matic MSP, is a company with strong roots to the computer manufacturing company, Gateway, Inc.  PC Pitstop founder and CEO, Rob Cheng, started his career at Gateway in 1991 as their first Director of Marketing. Gateway was booming and he held a succession of increasingly challenging positions including Vice President of Marketing, Vice President of Desktop Products, General Manager Gateway Europe, and Senior Vice President of Gateway Consumer, responsible for sales, marketing and support worldwide.  In 1999, he left Gateway to begin his own journey in entrepreneurship, with the creation of PC Pitstop.

Shortly after starting PC Pitstop, Rob reached out to long-time Gateway, Inc. Executive Assistant, Sheila Molden for part-time assistance with accounting and payroll duties.  She began working part-time for PC Pitstop in 2000, and transitioned to full-time employment in 2004, after leaving Gateway.  Sheila continues to head accounting and payroll for PC Pitstop, as well as several other duties ranging from customer service to human resources.

Rob then reached out to Lyle Schuknecht for assistance with database analysis.  Lyle agreed, working part-time for PC Pitstop, while also working full-time at Gateway Computers.  Prior to joining PC Pitstop full-time, Lyle worked at Gateway from 1992 to 2005 in various areas including consumer marketing, database marketing, and supply chain management.  In 2005, Lyle joined the PC Pitstop team full-time, and has been the go-to data analysis guru since.

Keith Linden, PC Pitstop’s Chief Operating Officer, has strong ties to Gateway as well.  In 1993, Keith began his employment at Gateway.  By 1995 he was the Manager of the American’s Material Forecasting team.  While in that role, Rob Cheng was the Senior Vice President that Keith reported to.  The material forecast drove and impacted the entire company and during that time it was Gateway’s most profitable point.  The accuracy of that forecast was a major contributing factor.  In 2004, Keith reached out to Rob regarding a potential opportunity at PC Pitstop.  He was hired at that time to develop PC Pitstop’s first e-commerce software application, Optimize.

PC Pitstop’s Vice President of Sales, Corey Munson is yet another Gateway-ian.  Corey worked at Gateway from 1997 to 2005 spending four years with Rob in direct sales and another four years with Keith in product marketing.  Approximately a year after leaving Gateway, Keith recruited Corey to the PC Pitstop team.  He has been with PC Pitstop since, leading both the marketing and sales departments.

As Cyber Threats Advance, So Does PC Matic

The PC Matic development team has been busy continuing to advance its security protection throughout the second quarter of 2019. Check out their latest updates impacting PC Matic Pro, below.

Anti-Tampering Protection

Through several recent quarters, our team has been adding additional features to PC Matic Pro to increase the security of our client on each device. These features began with a restriction on the uninstall process at each machine, limiting uninstalls to being initiated from within our web console. Next, we officially launched SuperShield’s ELAM (Early Launch Anti-Malware) Driver to allow our real-time protection to run as a protected process. This prevents users or malicious actors with remote control of a machine from removing or killing our real-time protection.

These changes mainly come as a response to the rise in RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) based attacks. This attack vector is becoming incredibly popular with cybercriminals and every day more businesses, schools, and governments are getting hit with ransomware through open RDP ports.

Speed & Stability Improvements

In the second quarter, our development team has refocused efforts from adding new features or capabilities into PC Matic Pro to improving speed and stability within our web console. You will continue to notice more improvements as the year continues related to overall speed, especially with larger accounts. Several areas, including the Devices list and Blocked Status Report, have already seen drastic increases in speed and stability.

This includes a drastic decrease in time required to whitelist applications from the Blocked Status Report, all actions here now happen in real-time to allow fast response to false positives on your account. Instead of waiting up to 15 minutes for whitelisted applications to sync down from your web console, now every device will immediately update to obtain those changes after saving.

Installer Options

To increase flexibility during the installation process, we have expanded the installer options available to include SuperShield Options. This allows you to set configurations like Enable Java, or Device/USB Control immediately on install instead of waiting for settings to take effect shortly after install has completed.
